June 2010
It is hard to believe that it is already June, and the close of the school year is just a few short weeks away. We are all anticipating having lots of fun at Olympic Day.
In religion we are learning that every Christian is called to love and serve God and others in the same way. We are studying about the two sacraments that call people to serve God’s family—Holy Orders and Matrimony.
In English we are continuing our study of verbs. The children are endeavoring to improve their recognition of action verbs, helping verbs, and linking verbs, as well as learn more about tenses: simple, progressive, and perfect.
My reading group recently finished reading Bridge to Terabithia. It is a story about two lonely fifth graders, Leslie and Jesse. The two of them become best friends, and together they create Terabithia, their magical kingdom in the nearby woods. The author has used many literary techniques throughout the book, so we have spent considerable time looking for them and figuring out their meanings. The children are looking forward to watching the movie so they can compare it with the book.
In Social Studies we have been learning about what was happening in the colonies from 1750 to 1775. The French and British fought for control of North America in the French and Indian War. After the Treaty of Paris the colonists were eager to settle in Britain’s newly won lands, but King George III issued a proclamation forbidding the colonists from going to the Ohio Valley. The colonists and British leaders began to disagree over British control of the colonies. New tax laws passed by Parliament further angered the colonists because they did not have a voice in the government. The battles of Concord and Lexington marked the beginning of a long, bitter war between Britain and its 13 colonies.
During our field trip to Concord, Massachusetts the students will participate in Concord Museum’s “Relive 1775” program. The children will become members of six prominent Concord families for the day and will find out about the dilemma that faced the Concord townspeople in 1775.
Parents, thank you for your support this year—by helping with the goodies and supplies for our parties and driving for the trip to Squam Lake Science Center. But I especially want to say thanks for encouraging your child to always strive to do his/her best! I hope you all have a wonderful summer and will be able to relax, play, read, and spend time together.
