March 2010

The weather has been beautiful as we begin the month of March and the students of 5B are getting excited about spring.  The month of February found 5A and 5B working diligently to sell Cookie-grams around the school to be delivered the Friday before Valentine’s Day.  The students named the campaign “Our Hearts are for Haiti” and with the help of our parents delivered the cookies, collecting $653.50.  The money was sent to the Sisters of the Holy Cross in Haiti.  The students in both 5th grade classes continue to follow the example set by our Lord and Savior.

The students in 5A and 5B Science class have finished up the unit on Human Body Systems.  We will be starting a new unit on Matter and Energy, which will include hands-on work with Simple Machines.  A Young Inventors Project was recently completed with each student in grades 3-6 inventing something that would be useful in today’s world.  We had many interesting inventions in our class including a Cat Café, which won first prize for our grade level.  This Young Inventor will carry the project to the state competition next month.

Our reading group has almost completed its journey across the Oregon Trail with Mary Ellen Todd and her family.  We are learning so much about the courage it took for the families to undertake such a journey and the perseverance to finish it.  We will complete this unit mid-March and move on to the multicultural genre.  The students have asked many questions throughout Bound for Oregon about Native Americans.  Our next book will help answer many of these questions.  We will be reading the Sign of the Beaver in class with the students taking on a separate book outside of class to help broaden their understanding of other cultures.

Math is a favorite subject among the students in 5B and they have been working hard on long division skills.  They have successfully worked their way to dividing decimals by decimals.  Our next unit will focus on utilizing these new found skills as we organize data.

We took our 2nd grade buddies on a trip around the world last month.  Thanks to the 6th grade classes and their Country Fair, the buddies were able to learn about different countries and sample some very delicious food from these regions.

5B is a hub of activity with a group of amazing students working together as a community of learners.
