Here's a very short
description of what we're doing in computer class just now. I
update this monthly, so check back often!
May / June
 They choose Web Site creation as their final year end project. They will be spending most of the quarter creating pages for a web site. At the end of the year, they will be playing a special computer version of Jeopardy.
April
We introduced a new concept in keyboarding - speed! The classes are divided into teams and are playing "Keyboarding baseball". We reviewed everything they have learned so far in preparation for their quiz.
March
Sixth graders will be learning some new formatting techniques and computer terminology as they work on their Dictionaries.
February
Sixth graders were rewarded with a "free choice" day to celebrate Catholic Schools week. During the rest of February, they will be learning how to use Excel to record the results of a scientific experiment.
January
They will be finishing their PowerPoint presentation this month. They are now using Mavis Beacon for keyboarding practice.
December
The students will be examining the anatomy of a computer. In class, we removed the back of a PC and discussed the various components. They took pictures of the various parts of a PC and will combine it with web research to put together a PowerPoint presentation on Computer Hardware.
November
The students explored some new features on Microsoft word, including cut/copy/paste. We also talked about proofreading, and how to use the spell checker to their advantage. They wrote a review of an educational web site which will become a newsletter later in the year.
October
We
will be discussing safe research techniques, and looking at some of the
great web sites, such as Factmonster, that are available to help with
homework. They continued added terms to their Computer Terminology Dictionary. This gives them practice
using their developing keyboarding skill in a practical manner.
September
They are getting
keyboarding practice using Mavis Beacon.. We will be talking about Internet
Safety, using the NetSmartz web site, and they will be completing a
worksheet on this topic. We discuss computer ethics and copyright issues
in sixth grade.
